Spiritual and Emotional Care Teams

SWTX Conference United Methodist disaster Response Care Ministry Teams (“Care Teams”) are faith-based, on-going teams with standardized UMCOR training that provide spiritual and emotional care following disasters.

Reaching out from the faith community, Care Teams help disaster survivors connect with their personal and community spiritual, emotional, and basic life resources.

While Care Teams do not normally provide traditional individual or ongoing counseling, their purpose is:

o    To show the church cares, offering a listening presence;

o    To reduce the terrible aloneness survivors feel;

o    To connect survivors with long-term disaster recovery systems, gathering information and providing support and information about the recovery process and available services.

Standardized UMCOR Training is required

All Care Team members are required to complete a standardized training offered by UMCOR.  Additional training is encouraged.

The basic training includes:

o    Basics of spiritual and emotional care and theology following disasters;

o    Disaster trauma and the long-term disaster recovery process,

o    The phases of disaster and stages of trauma recovery,

o    Common and not-so-common reactions to stress,

o    Practical stress reduction ideas;

o    Congregational and community trauma;

o    Caring for the caregiver;

o    Meeting with survivors,

o    Disaster emotional and spiritual care ethics,

o    Strategies for handling difficult situations,

o    When, where and how to refer survivors for further care,

o    Defusing and basic crisis intervention strategies.
