Wimberley UMC kids raise $1,212 for tsunami relief

Upon hearing of the tsunami tragedy the day after Christmas, Nancy McDougall wanted to find a way for the children of Wimberley UMC to reach out to those affected.
McDougall, minister of Christian education, talked with the children, and together they decided to create cards to be sold and sent to relief workers in the region. Proceeds would benefit the United Methodist Committee on Relief.
After two weekends, the project has raised $1,215.
“I think it’s important that children feel a sense of empowerment and learn at a very young age that they can be involved in helping others in proactive ways,” McDougall said.
Children drew color pictures expressing themes of global unity, hope, hands of different colors and people helping one another. The pictures were scanned onto note cards with this message inside:
“The entire community of Wimberley, Texas, USA, is continuing to pray for the children and families in the countries of Southeast Asia affected by the tsunami disaster and for all the relief workers.”
Children and their parents, manning tables outside local businesses for three weekends, planned to sell the cards for $5 each. Purchasers were to sign their names and add their own message. Then the church was to mail the cards to the relief committee and UNICEF to be forwarded to relief workers.
