Victoria District superintendent selected

United Methodists in the Victoria District are to welcome a new superintendent in June.
The Rev. Terrence K. Hayes, pastor of St. Paul UMC, San Antonio, is to succeed the Rev. William B. “Ber-nie” Sandburg as superintendent of the 9,876-member district. Sandburg, 64, who has supervised the district since 1999, is retiring after 42 years of ministry.
Bishop Joel N. Martinez announced in early February that Hayes would join his seven-member cabinet following the June 7-10 Southwest Texas Annual Conference session in Corpus Christi.
As a superintendent, Hayes, 52, is to be an extension of the bishop’s office and advise Mar-tinez on pastoral appointments. He is to provide spiritual and administrative leadership to pastors and members of the 51 congregations in the Victoria District and represent The United Methodist Church hierarchy to them.
Hayes has been pastor of the 907-member San Antonio congregation since 1996. He served on the staff of the General Board of Discipleship in Nashville, Tenn., for 10 years before that.
Hayes began his ministry in 1984 in the Holston Conference, which covers portions of eastern Tennessee and western Virginia.
