District men plan spring,
summer events

The Austin District and Southwest Texas Conference United Methodist Men offer the following events and opportunities:
n The second annual Austin District UM Men golf tournament is set for April 22 at the Blackhawk Golf Club in Pflugerville. This scholarship benefit is for young people in scouting and youth groups. There will be food, many prizes, fellowship and a $10,000 prize for a hole in one. The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The club is offering free greens fees for a practice round the week before the tournament. Entry fee is $75 per player. For additional information contact Grady Elliott at (512) 443-4023 or Ralph Eckwall at (512) 452-4933, or go to www.gbgm-umc.org/austinumm/2006golfflyer.pdf.
n A conferencewide working retreat for men and boys is planned for April 28 through 30 at Mount Wesley Conference Center, Kerrville. The purpose of the event is to bring men and boys together so that relationships will develop and grow as they work side by side. This event will provide a wonderful time of fellowship and spiritual growth as teams of men and boys work on maintenance projects at Mount Wesley.
The spiritual leaders will be the Rev. Harry Kahl, conference congregational growth director; the Rev. Warren Hornung, senior pastor, First UMC, Kerrville; and Jay Cooper, Austin District youth director. Stay for a full weekend or come Saturday. Volunteers will man the UMM-supported Upper Room Prayer Line for eight hours during the weekend. For prices and information about accommodations, go to www.gbgm-umc.org/austinumm/. You can download the registration form there.
n Dates have been set for upcoming Austin District UM Men quarterly meetings. The main speaker May 20 at Crestview UMC, Austin, will be the Rev. Don Muchow, a retired rear admiral and former U.S. Navy chief of chaplains. He is to speak about “Strength for Service,” concentrating on the spiritual role churchmen can take.
Glenn Wintembert, national association conference president, is to address “Legacy of Man” at First UMC, Bastrop, Aug. 12.
n Scouters and youth directors can help fund kids’ summer camps, retreats or scout camps through the Austin District UMM Scholarship Program. Download forms at www. gbgm-umc.org/austinumm/scholarship.html. Youths must submit an application form to the Austin District UMM scouting coordinator and obtain a UMM sponsor from their church.
