San Angelo pastor picked
to lead McAllen District

McAllen District United Methodists are to welcome a San Angelo pastor as their new superintendent in June.
The Rev. Larry C. Howard, 59, senior pastor of First UMC, San Angelo, is to succeed the Rev. Kim Cape as superintendent of the 8,704-member McAllen District.
Cape, 54, who has led the McAllen District since 2002, has been named Austin District superintendent.
Bishop Joel N. Martinez has announced his intention to make these pastoral appointments during the June 7-10 Southwest Texas Annual Conference session in Corpus Christi.
As a superintendent, Howard is to be an extension of the bishop’s office and advise Martinez on pastoral appointments. He is to provide spiritual and administrative leadership to pastors and members of the 38 congregations in the McAllen District and represent The United Methodist Church hierarchy to them.
Howard, a Merkel native, has been senior pastor of the 1,093-member San Angelo congregation since 2004.
Before that he served congregations in Corpus Christi, Del Rio, Manchaca, San Antonio, Sterling City and Water Valley.
Howard earned a bachelor’s degree in 1968 from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, and a master of divinity degree in 1973 from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Howard was ordained a deacon in 1980 and an elder in 1984.
