Amazing Grace youth group values serving
The “Amazing Grace Youth Group” at Grace UMC, Corpus Christi, makes service and mission a priority in all it does.
Being the hands and feet of Christ is its goal, and serving the community and beyond has become a passion
for this group of teenagers.
From going to Progreso and Rio Bravo, Mexico, the last seven years to build small homes, libraries or whatever is needed to participating in its own Sea City Work Camp since 1993, this group is constantly looking for new ways to serve.
Recently members connected with Corpus Christi police to assist monthly with the “Graffiti Wipe-out” program. They go with officers to areas that have been “tagged” and paint over the graffiti to restore beauty to the area.
Members have been collecting canned goods for their church’s food pantry for more than 15 years. Ring tabs for the Ronald McDonald House became another project about two years ago. So did sponsoring a child in Africa through World Vision. The group began sponsoring children in third world countries in 1998. Daniel Nourbarange from Chad is the group’s latest child.
After participating in a “30 Hour Famine” event, the group realized that members could make a difference. They adopted the Wesley Community Center in Robstown, making 71 Easter baskets for the children in the daycare center.
The Corpus Christi Food Bank has been a project the group has done monthly the last two months—sorting food and other items to be taken to the many shelters in the city and to needy families in their city.
Participating in mission projects fills the spirit. Kathy Rios is the director of youth ministries at Grace UMC,
with a tenure of 17 years.
