UM students deliver potatoes
to food pantries

San Antonio food pantries and soup kitchens received a huge helping of potatoes April 1.
That was when the volunteers from United Methodist Campus Ministry at the University of Texas at San Antonio and San Antonio College distributed some 40,000 pounds of potatoes to community and church agencies that feed the hungry.
About 25 people—two-thirds students, the rest parents, members of United Methodist Men and community leaders—converged on UTSA’s downtown campus early that morning to unload 100-pound bags of potatoes for the Society of St. Andrew Potato Drop.
The potatoes, donated by a grower in Minnesota, are commercially unmarketable because of their sizes (either too large or too small) or because of minor blemishes.
Charles Massiatte, a San Antonio College student, organized the Potato Drop with the help of Campus Ministry’s Diane Davis.
“Christ told us to feed the hungry and care for those in need,” Massiatte said. “This is the least we can do in loving God and serving our neighbor in need.”
The Rev. David L. Semrad, director of campus ministry in San Antonio, said he would like to see the Potato Drop become an annual project for the campus ministry program.
