Saturday benefit in Willacy
County is memorial to mother of UM
Mildred Moon, the late mother of First UMC, Ray-mondville, layperson of the year Brenda Kirman, will be remembered April 29 by participants in the Willacy County Crime Stoppers’ Memorial Moon Walk/Run. The course is a 5K run or a 1 mile walk through the streets of Raymondville.
In the early morning of May 2, 1995, Mildred Moon, 73, a longtime Raymondville resident, was strangled to death by a man stealing money to buy drugs.
By Friday of that week, $5,000 had been donated by friends to offer as rewards to informants. The money was refused by the informants, and family members of the victim were asked what they wanted done with it.
With the hope of keeping such crimes from ever happening again, the Willacy County Crime Stoppers was begun in August 1995. Thousands of reward dollars have since been given out with the help of sponsors and participants in the Memorial Moon Walk/Run.
The walk/run begins at 8 a.m. in front of the Raymond-ville High School gymnasium. This benefit is the 11th annual.Saturday benefit in Willacy County is memorial to mother of UM
