Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University is planning to teach five courses this fall in San Antonio.
Fall semester classes begin Aug. 21 and continue through Dec. 11. They are taught Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and occasional Saturdays at University UMC, San Antonio.
In addition, spiritual formation sessions for students meet several Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each month.
Scheduled fall courses are:
> Interpretation of the New Testament I, taught by Jamie Clark-Soles, assistant professor of New Testament.
> Introduction to Theology, taught by Theodore Walker Jr., associate professor of ethics and society.
> United Methodist Polity (Aug. 28-Oct. 9).
> United Methodist Doctrine (Oct. 23-Dec. 4).
> Introduction to Preaching, taught by John C. Holbert, Lois Craddock Perkins professor of homiletics.
The New Testament, theology and preaching courses carry three semester hours of credit. The polity and doctrine courses are worth 1.5 semester hours each.
“Students attending the San Antonio extension program range from master of divinity candidates to laypeople deepening their theological understanding, said Jason Pangiarella, director of recruitment and admissions. “Although many students come from the United Methodist tradition, there are others from a variety of denominations, such as Disciples of Christ, Lutheran and African Methodist Episcopal.”
The San Antonio program offers students preparing for church leadership an opportunity to begin study toward two different master’s degrees, master of divinity and master of church ministries.
Students may take 24 credit hours in San Antonio. Students must complete at least 24 credit hours at the Dallas campus to earn a degree. Additional hours may be taken at either site.
