St. John UMC plans to take VBS off-site

Instead of the usual Vacation Bible School setting in the church’s Sunday school rooms and fellowship hall, St. John UMC, Rio Grande City, is about to “take Bible stories to where the kids are,” according to Pastor Pasha Buck.
Armed with a full set of Bible story videos by Nest Family Entertainment, four members are set to lead children on an exploration of the Bible throughout the summer and into the fall.
Elvia Ramirez serves as lead teacher. Lorena Garcia is hostess. Two public school teachers, Jeannie Anderson and Linda Chapa, will provide teaching and “cookie” support. Others in the congregation will help as needed.
Many of the congregation’s children and youths live in Garciasville, Sullivan City and Mission, as much as 20 to 30 miles from the church’s building in Rio Grande City. The expense of busing kids to the church has led to an effort to provide the same Bible school education “in their own back yard.”
Each Nest video has received the coveted Award of Excellence from the Film Advisory Board, and Early Childhood News has recognized these animated videos with the Director’s Choice Award.
The videos are part of an ongoing last-Sunday-of-the-month video series, an inter-generational Bible study, to which everyone is encouraged to bring a friend.
