CC Wesley Center receives major grant
The Corpus Christi city council recently allocated $100,000 from a $3.9 million federal Community Development Block Grant to the Corpus Christi Wesley Community Center.
This money, available after Aug. 1, will be applied to the note on the property, substantially reducing quarterly payments.
Funds given towards payment on the note by local churches and local units of United Methodist Women, added to grant funds, will further reduce the quarterly payments and free more money for program priorities of the center.
A wing of the center is being converted into rooms for a new ministry to children and youths who must be removed from violent or abusive situations as they await assignment to foster care.
A number of UMW units and local churches have donated bedding and other furnishings for the rooms. Members of Junior League Corpus Christi will soon begin to paint and decorate the rooms, making them inviting and child-friendly.
The need exists for air conditioning for new upstairs living quarters. The center is looking for a seven-ton, three-cycle air conditioning unit.
Another need is for a small bus to pick up children from homeless shelters and transport them to and from the center.
If you can help the Wesley Community Center acquire either an air conditioner or a bus, please call Eddie Jackson Mathis, Wesley Center director, at (361) 880-8300.
