Edinburg UMs invite kids to VBS at ‘Día Del Niño’

First UMC, Edinburg, promoted Vacation Bible School during Communities in Schools’ “Día Del Niño” April 30.
The program at Edinburg’s Municipal Park featured booths from more than a dozen community organizations. More than 700 school children attended the day of festivities.
Booths were designed to educate and entertain the children
Edinburg United Methodists passed out invitations to summer Bible classes at their ping-pong ball toss booth.
First UMC’s Vacation Bible School is scheduled for June 14 to 18.
“It’s great to be with CIS today,” said John Fletcher, First UMC’s lay ministerial assistant. “We’re taking this opportunity to advertise our upcoming Vacation Bible School.”
The Rev. Mark Adams, First UMC pastor, added, “We have handed out more than 500 invitations to VBS. We recommend this program to everyone.”
Other booths included:
> Edinburg Police Department’s patrol car tour.
> Palmer Drug Abuse Program anti-drug display.
> CIS’s face painting.
> Edinburg Volunteer Fire Depart-ment’s “Fire Safety House” trailer tour.
> Rio Grande Valley Council literature stand.
Additional activities included a moon jump, Hula Hoop contest, a dance crazy contest, a tour of an ambulance and a hot dog lunch.
“Communities in Schools,” said Gloria Fletcher, a United Methodist and CIS employee, “is about helping children stay excited about school and keeping them attending.”
Along with sponsoring Día Del Niño, CIS provides case management programs, resourcing for educational professionals, tutoring and dropout prevention programs.
The 408-member Edinburg congregation moved into its new location on University Boulevard in early 2003. The congregation began preparing for Día Del Niño in late March.
