Center makes more scholarships available
At the May board meeting of Montopolis Friendship Community Center, Martha Renfro, chair of the Bob and Velma Miles Scholarship Committee, requested permission to add four new students to the three who have been receiving financial help from the center for several years. The new students come from the Montopolis area and attend Del Valle or Crockett high schools.
With the new additions approved, the community center will be assisting two students at Austin Community College, two at Texas State University in San Marcos, one at St. Edwards University in Austin or TSTA, one at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio and one at McMurry University in Abilene.
In recent years the center has marked the graduation of three from its scholarship program. They went to Texas A&M, Baylor and St. Mary’s universities. The scholarship program is an important part of the outreach of the center, operated by United Methodist Women of the Austin District, and receives financial gifts marked for Scholarship Help at P.O. Box 4691, Austin 78765.
In other business, the board increased the monthly school fee to $40. Eleven students are enrolled, and scholarship help is available for them also.
Volunteers are needed on the first Saturdays of June and July to work in the clothing sales room and on the first and third Saturdays in August.
On the first Saturday in August, a grand sale will clear out the clothing rooms to make them ready for winter merchandise.
