Leonard Sweet to lead Jan. 29 conference in Junction
The San Angelo District announces that the Rev. Leonard Sweet will be leading a conference Jan. 29 in Junction.
Sweet is to speak on “Ponder Anew What the Almighty Can Do!”
Sweet is E. Stanley Jones professor of evangelism at United Methodist-related Drew University, Madison, N.J. He had been vice president of academic affairs and dean of the Theological School for five years.
Sweet previously served for 11 years as president and professor of church history at United Methodist-related United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio.
Sweet is also serving a term as visiting distinguished professor at George Fox University, Newburg/Portland, Ore.
He previously was a speaker at Encuentro and is an author of more than 100 articles, 400 published sermons and 20 books.
In early 2001 Sweet and his wife, Karen Elizabeth Rennie, launched in partnership with Group Publishing the Web-based preaching resource PreachingPlus.com.
For nine years the Sweets co-wrote Homiletics, which became under their watch the premier preaching resource in North America. His first bestselling book, FaithQuakes (1994), was selected that year as one of the “10 best religion books” and “10 must-read books.” It was followed by Health and Medicine in the Evangelical Tradition (1994), Communication & Change in American Religious History (1994), Strong in the Broken Places (1995), an audio seminar with Rick Warren called The Tides of Change (1995) and The Jesus Prescription for a Healthy Life (1996). More recent books include Eleven Genetic Gateways to Spiritual Awakening (1998), A Cup of Coffee at the Soul Cafe (1998) and his successor book to FaithQuakes, the new best-seller SoulTsunami: Sink or Swim in the Millennium Culture (1999).
