Sea City Work Camp develops common bonds

Sea City Work Camp is an ecumenical service project sponsored by the Corpus Christi District using high school youths to repair low-income housing.
The camp was created in 1993 to offer high school youths an opportunity to experience the value and joy of serving neighbors and to grow in self-worth as they discover new skills. This year’s camp runs June 17 to 22.
The camp was and still is designed to serve the low-income homeowners in Corpus Christi, giving families a chance at a new beginning. The project is a response to Christ’s instructions to love our neighbor, to help those in need and to share the good news of Jesus Christ.
Sea City Work Camp has measurable economic impact. It upgrades the standard of living for the homes repaired and revitalizes the neighborhood. But far more important than economics, this camp shatters barriers when people work together for the good of the community.
Prejudice cycles are broken. People look beyond skin to see eye-to-eye and heart-to-heart. Youths discover and learn new skills they never dreamed of possessing. Self-esteem soars in youths who participate in this life-changing event. Best of all, relationships and friendships are built with Christ’s love serving as the common bond.
Goals:
> Rehabilitate lower income housing.
> Serve the homeowners.
>Change the neighborhood we serve.
> Break down barriers.
> Build relationships.
> Provide hands-on service experience to high school youths.
> Team youths with supervising adults.
> Share the good news of Jesus Christ.
