Look for moments to feel God's pleasure

Reflections on the Church:
Triple play: Reason to cheer
Several years ago, in sifting through some old newspapers, I came across a sports article that caught my eye:
“Velarde turns rare unassisted triple play.”
In a baseball game played in New York May 29, 2000, Oakland A’s second baseman Randy Velarde executed an unassisted triple play—only the 10th in regular season play.
Yankee runners on first and second base were signaled to run when the ball was pitched.
Shane Spencer hit a line drive to Velarde’s right. Velarde caught the ball for the out. Then he tagged out the guy who had started running from first base. Finally, he stepped on second base to complete the play on the guy who was already running from second to third.
If I had been there to watch the game, this play alone would have been worth the price of admission!
Every now and then, in baseball and in daily events, we see people do their jobs so well that we want to cheer.
In the movie “Chariots of Fire,” the Scottish pastor-runner tells his sister, “When I run, I feel God’s pleasure.”
Be on the lookout for these moments. Give thanks to God, and rejoice in the beauty of human beings fully alive.
