Speaker explains role of campus ministry

Isn’t it time for your congregation to learn more about the United Campus Ministries of Corpus Christi?
The Rev. Grover Pinson, campus minister, is available to speak to any size group. He is also available to preach on a Sunday or give a five-minute ministry moment.
Please contact him at (361) 857-0218 or ucmcc@ aol.com to schedule a date and time.
United Campus Ministries serves both Del Mar College and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. It is known as the place where anyone can come, no matter how “different.”
Spiritual development is promoted through prayer, study and worship in weekly meetings on campus and in homes. Meetings include social witness. Several handicapped students participate.
United Campus Ministries of Corpus Christi is affiliated with United Campus Ministries of Texas.
The four denominations involved are The United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Pinson, a native of Corpus Christi, was hired in 2001 as a full-time campus minister.
United Campus Ministries of Corpus Christi operates on a $20,000 total annual budget. That compares to campus ministry budgets of more than $80,000 at other major universities.
Volunteers passionate about students are needed to help with the ministry. Immediate opportunities include scheduling lunches, scheduling speakers, arranging for publicity and raising funds.
“We are trying to put in place some other unique ministries, such as a food bank specifically for college students,” Pinson said. “Students could donate to it and help volunteer on a selected day. Issues like that grab the attention of college students.
“College students—including those who have been raised in the church—are the least likely of any age group to attend church. We have to bring the church to them during this transition time.
“Later, after they settle in careers and begin families, they begin to look at participating in church life again.”
Both campus ministry locations are District Advance Specials.
Del Mar College’s campus ministry is Fund No. 1208.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s is Fund No. 1209.
