District sets fall lay speaker training dates

The Corpus Christi District will offer training for lay speakers Sept. 15 and 16.
The lay speaker training will include both the basic and advanced courses. Location will be First UMC, Portland.
The basic course is for adults and young people interested in becoming lay speakers. This course covers all areas of lay speaking, including our personal calling, United Methodist theology, leading worship, preaching, witnessing, teaching, leadership, service and growing in faith.
The advanced course, entitled “Lay Speakers Lead Worship,” is designed for lay speakers who occasionally or regularly lead congregations, organizations, classes or groups in worship. Participants will better understand corporate worship, learn how to plan worship and develop practical skills.
Lay speakers are called to proclaim the gospel through witness of the spoken word, vital leadership service and care-giving ministry.
Lay speakers are active, supportive members of a United Methodist congregation. They are eager to serve through the church; willing to learn more about scripture and doctrine, heritage, organization and life of the UMC; committed to witnessing through church and community leadership, care-giving ministries and spoken communication; and willing to improve their skills for service.
To find out more about lay speaking ministries or to register for a lay speaking course, pick up a registration brochure in your church office, or call Stephanie Creech, Corpus Christi District lay speaking director, at (361) 777-2000.
