VBS takes kids to Jesus’ time
Memorial UMC, Austin, had a wonderful Vacation Bible School July 11 through 14 combining the English and Spanish sessions. The church’s Wesley School also participated.
Our program for this year was “Marketplace, 29AD” (the original version). We had a great time discovering what things may have been like in a village in the days of Jesus. We had everything from a storyteller and a scribe to a potter’s shop and brickmaker’s shop.
Each day the children heard stories that Jesus told and stories about Jesus. They learned Hebrew folk music, which was beautiful and fun to sing.
During the week of “Marketplace, 29AD” more than 75 children participated. More than 40 adults and teenages helped.
With everyone working together, VBS was very successful. We even braved 95-plus degree heat and had our marketplace outside in the church courtyard. That made for many more sights, sounds and smells than probably would have been part of a 29AD marketplace experience.
We hope to offer “Marketplace, 29AD—2006” next year. We thank the Lord for giving us guidance and inspiration as we experienced this year.
We would recommend this VBS experience to any church. It is very doable and educational, and the children love it.
