Explore lay speaking ministry

Anyone interested in becoming a lay speaker is invited to attend training next month.
There are two training courses. One is the basic course, and the other is the advanced course.
The basic course, offered Sept. 16 and 17 at First UMC, Rockport, is designed for adults and youths interested in becoming lay speakers. It covers all areas of lay speaking, including personal calling, United Methodist theology, leading worship, preaching, witnessing, teaching, leadership, service and growing in faith.
The advanced course, also to be taught Sept. 16 and 17 at First UMC, Rockport, is for people who are already lay speakers. It is designed to help lay speakers learn what makes a good story, discover their own style as a storyteller, learn the techniques of effective storytelling and practice creating stories from their own experience.
Lay speakers are called to proclaim the gospel through witness of the spoken word, vital leadership service and caregiving ministry. Lay speaking could be a calling for you if you are committed to witness through church and community leadership, caregiving ministries and the spoken word. These courses will help you improve your skills for service.
For information pick up a registration brochure in your church office or call Stephanie Creech, district lay speaking director, at (361) 777-2000.
