Wimberley Back-to-School Fiesta aids 100 students

More than 100 youngsters picked up free school supplies Aug. 10 during a Back-to-School Fiesta at Wim-berley UMC.
The Hayes County Health Department immunized more than 40 children at the event.
Wimberley ISD Nurse Darrelle Jordan helped families sign up for the state Children’s Health Insurance Plan and collected appropriate shot records for junior high and high school students.
Payton Lawrence and Janet Sharpe gave back-to-school haircuts to some 20 children. Another 10 youngsters received certificates for free haircuts from area salons and Corky’s Barber Shop.
Texans In Motion helped families make sure their children’s car seats were installed properly. The group checked for recalls and provided car seats to families in need.
“There are no words to express the thankfulness I feel,” one mother said about the Fiesta. “You’ve made the ‘impossible’ a ‘done deal’ for me and my three children! God bless you all!”
The Wimberley UMC Barnabas Connection played host to the event. The group enlisted support from the Wimberley Rotary Club, Cypress Creek Church, Wimberley Presbyterian Church, St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Crisis Bread Basket, H.E.B. Grocery and Star Office Products.
These churches, civic organizations and companies provided school supplies, financial support and many volunteers. School supplies not given out Aug. 10 went directly to schools for further distribution.
The Barnabas Connection is a nondenominational community outreach provided by the Wimberley UMC. Volunteers are available at (512) 847-1664 to help the community access available resources (food, utilities, counseling, medical, etc.) in Hays County and Central Texas.
