May storms damage roof at Montopolis Center

May storms took off a good portion of the roof at Austin’s Montopolis Friendship Community Center.
As a result, water damaged the inside of the building. The air conditioning system failed and now needs to be replaced.
Insurance moneys have been received for the damage, and the center’s Missions Commission replaced the roof over the kitchen, Colorado hall and the sorting room in July. The ceiling in the sorting room and kitchen still needs to be replaced.
Westlake UMC, Austin, is replacing the stove that was standing in water from the storm. A light fixture is needed in the school. The list of needs continues. The center has insufficient funds to cover the bills.
Montopolis Friendship Community Center was established in the late 1950s as a mission outreach of UM Women in the Austin District.
Programs include early childhood preschool, Mother’s Day Out, thrift clothing room, Wesley nurse and a senior activities project. The building is available as a community center to the Montopolis area.
Many UMW units continue to support the center financially and with donations of clothing and household items for the thrift store, layette items for infants, and paper products, snacks and gifts for children in preschool.
