Clothing closet in Austin
marks 7th anniversary

Service to homeless
started by UM Men
aids 10,000 since ’98

The Homeless Men’s Clothing Closet in Austin—a project started by Austin District United Methodist Men—has marked its seventh birthday.
During that time the clothing closet at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless—or ARCH—has served more than 10,000 men.
Begun in 1998 as an outgrowth of Austin Metropolitan Ministries, the clothing closet has been open every Monday morning. The closet is thought to be one of the longest-serving church ministries of its kind in the capital city.
The closet challenges Austin churches to donate castoff and no-longer-used clothing.
Ten volunteer men distribute clothing each Monday morning. Some 40-to-50 homeless men receive up to three items each week.
ARCH is funded by Austin city government, social service agencies and United Methodist congregations in the Austin District.
