Austin center has high hopes for haiku entry
Austin’s Montopolis Friendship Community Center and its haiku were featured on the front of the Metro/State section of a recent Austin American-Statesman.
In an original way of writing a grant proposal, Community Tech Knowledge required entries to be in the form of a haiku describing the heart of each organization’s mission.
Sue Sidney, community center board member, created and submitted the following:
Learn love laugh children
Cultures knit, friendships woven
Lives launched carefully
The article said that Friendship Center “pulled on the heartstrings with its submission—after a little research, that is.”
“We laughed because some of us didn’t even know what a haiku was,” Sidney was quoted as saying.
The center didn’t win the $5,000. That went to Hospice Austin, featured in the article along with Friendship Center.
