African music to be featured
at Westlake UMC, Austin
An African Hymn Sing is scheduled for Nov. 12 at Westlake UMC, Austin, from 1 to 2 p.m. A box lunch at 12:15 p.m. may be reserved by calling the church office at (512) 327-1335.
The church is playing host to an African Church Music Seminar Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. until noon. Seminar participants are to sing and lead in singing from the books Africa Praise Songbook (GBGMusik) and Njalo (Abingdon). Resources will be available for purchase on site.
Dr. Patrick Matsikenyiri of Africa University in Old Mutare, Zimbabwe, a prominent musician in the UMC of Zimbabwe, is to lead the session.
The seminar is to feature a special appearance by Djembabes.
UM Men quarterly meeting
slated for Nov. 18 at Memorial
The Austin District UM Men are to meet Nov. 18 at Memorial UMC, Austin. Guest speaker Bob Lively is to provide insight on “What God Expects of Us” (from the prophet Micah).
Lively is an ordained Presbyterian minister, college and seminary instructor, counselor, author, Austin American-Statesman columnist, and more.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast at 8 a.m.
Churches urged to observe
Children's Sabbath Oct. 22
The theme for this year’s observance of the Children’s Sabbath is “Congregations Stand for Healthy Children: Bringing Hope and Healing.”
The Children’s Defense Fund is suggesting Oct. 22 as the date for the Sabbath, but congregations should choose a Sunday convenient for them.
Materials to help plan the sabbath may be ordered from the Austin CDF Office by calling Anne at (512) 480-0990.
Appreciation dinner offers
tahns, accolades to pastors
Austin District senior pastors, associate pastors, retired pastors and their spouses are to be honored during the first pastor appreciation dinner at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Northwest Hills UMC, 7050 Village Center Drive, Austin.
Speaker for the night is Gil Hanke, president of the General Commission on UM Men. The theme for the evening is “ministering to those who minister to us.”
The event is sponsored by the Austin District UM Men.
Richard Bolles helps Christ
followers find their life mission
The author of What Color Is Your Parachute? is to visit First Baptist Church, 901 Trinity St., Austin, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. until noon. The Rev. Richard N. Bolles is an Episcopal priest who writes books about career development.
Entrance fee is $20, or $10 with a current student ID.
Church wants to donate
communion plates, glasses
University UMC, Austin, has 15 communion metal plates and glasses it no longer uses. The church would like to donate these items to another church with love. Contact Gloria Hooper at (512) 478-9387 or office@uumc.org.
Tarrytown UMC, Austin, hosts
‘Nine Faces of God’ Oct. 22
Tarrytown UMC, 2601 Exposition, Austin, is playing host to “Nine Faces of God: The Enneagram and Spiritual Growth,” Oct. 22 from 2 to 5 p.m.
The workshop features Kathleen Hurley and Theodorre Donson, internationally recognized teachers and authors of What’s My Type, My Best Self and Discover Your Soul Potential. It is geared toward anyone interested in spiritual growth and development.
Registration costs $45 or $25 for students.
