Campus ministry students distribute
sweet potatoes around San Antonio
Students from the United Methodist Ministry at San Antonio College distributed more than 20,000 pounds of sweet potatoes one afternoon in August.
The potatoes arrived with a few hours notice from the Society of St. Andrew, an ecumenical gleaning ministry based in Big Island, Va.
The Methodist Student Center staff, headed by the Rev. David L. Semrad, directed the delivery from North Carolina to the San Antonio Food Bank. Students helped unload the potatoes for redistribution to food pantries and nonprofit agencies in a 16-county area.
The W.E. Bailey Co. donated the sweet potatoes, Semrad said.
“This is a huge donation,” Eric Cooper, food bank executive director, told the San Antonio College Ranger.
Methodist Student Center staff members helped coordinate deliveries to some 160 organizations around San Antonio. All 20,000 pounds of potatoes were distributed within a day.
The Society of St. Andrew receives produce harvested by major canners but not used because of slight imperfections. The food is distributed to organizations that serve the needy.
“We must always be mindful of the poor,” Semrad told the campus newspaper.
