I use lessons from 5-Day Academy in my devotional life

My View

Since 1999, our Southwest Texas Conference has offered a weeklong experience in spiritual renewal, refreshment and nurture known as the Five-Day Academy for Spiritual Formation.
This event, which occurs every two years, gives both laity and clergy an opportunity to hear excellent speakers with expertise in various areas of Christian spiritual formation, experience beautiful worship three times a day, have time for silence and reflection, and participate in an evening “covenant group” for sharing and encouragement.
A ministry of the conference Spiritual Formation Committee of the Board of Discipleship and Upper Room Ministries, the Five-Day Academy has brought in such distinguished leadership as Jorge Gon-zalez, Deborah Hanus, Roberta Bon-di and, most recently (2005), William Loyd Allen and Jane Vennard.
The next Five-Day Academy is scheduled for Jan. 8 through 13 at Zephyr Encampment on Lake Corpus Christi near Mathis. The theme of “Ancient Roots and Modern Branches” will be explored by Bruce Rigdon (an authority on Orthodox Christianity) and Kathryn Damiano (expert in post-modern spirituality).
The retreat leader, Billy Keen, and a wonderful team have been planning this special week.
I recommend this experience for all who are interested in growing in their faith and spiritual life. I have been blessed to attend the Two-Year Academy for Spiritual Formation, lead the 2005 Five-Day Academy and most recently participate in a “Ninth Week Academy.” These experiences have been life-changing for me in several ways as they truly connect “head and heart” in my Christian walk.
I have learned much about the spiritual heritage of Christianity and come to deeply appreciate the rich traditions that have been and are available to us all. As a result, I now incorporate many aspects of the academy experience into my own personal devotional life as well as in my ministry.
The rhythm of each day has blessed me with a way to order my own life. I have been nourished, nurtured and renewed in my walk with Christ. I have met new friends with whom to share this journey of life.
And I have experienced deep joy and communion with Jesus Christ and the community of faith.
Anyone can attend a Five-Day Academy, and the price is right! Through the generosity of a grant from Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, we can offer this event for $270 per person. Our event costs less than all the other academies offered around the United States (most charge around $400). Our fee covers comfortable accommodations, three good meals a day and dynamic speakers.
You can find more information and register online by going to www.umcswtx.org and clicking on Five-Day Academy. Registration deadline is Dec. 1.
I pray you will consider participating in this wonderful opportunity for spiritual growth and renewed vitality in your walk with Christ. You will be blessed!
