San Antonio congregation plans
Dec. 1 World AIDS Day service
Travis Park UMC, San Antonio, plans to mark World AIDS Day Dec. 1 with a special 7 p.m. worship service.
The General Board of Church and Society is urging churches to plan events for the sake of the millions of people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, said spokeswoman Shirley Watkins. “Travis Park has answered the call,” she said.
San Antonio AIDS and arts organizations are joining Travis Park in planning the special service.
The order of worship is to include music, liturgy, spoken word and experiential prayer. The Alamo City Men’s Chorale and the Rev. Michael Hawn of Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology are to take part.
A reception is to follow the service. Local AIDS organizations are to have information about the disease available.
“AIDS and poverty are the defining issues of our generation,” said the Rev. Joe Stobaugh, Travis Park minister of music. “The church, in addition to being a place of love and compassion, is also called to fight injustice and to make God’s world a better place for all of God’s creation. This service is but one step in this process.”
