Dewville UMs offer coffee, doughnuts to rural commuters

Jack Fitzpatrick (left) and Shirley Hester (center), both members of Dewville UMC, offer motorists free coffee, doughnuts and tacos along FM 1117. Every Wednesday from 6 to 8 a.m. church members greet motorists traveling along the route that takes rural residents to work in Seguin. The “Coffee at the Curb” outreach began during the summer in front of an out-of-business store 11 miles north of Dewville. From 15 to 25 commuters now stop each week, including several “regulars,” said the Rev. Gerald Harvey, pastor. “This isn’t a fund raiser,” Harvey said. “We don’t even accept donations because then it isn’t free.” Travelers receive a card inviting them to attend church. “If we can get them to church,” one church member said, “well and good. If not, then at the very least, they can see Christians in action.”
