Presentation raises awareness
of Amos Commission

United Methodist Women at Oak Hill UMC, Austin, are planting seeds!
More than 45 people attended the Oct. 24 presentation by the Austin District Amos Commission. Wanda Holcombe delivered the new Amos Commission PowerPoint presentation explaining the concept of moving from charity toward justice. She then led the group in brainstorming social concerns, the underlying blocks to addressing these concerns, and some ways that Oak Hill UMC could develop actions to affect these blocks. Seeds were planted for further discussion and possibly for the formation of an Amos Commission at Oak Hill.
Camille Raycraft, Oak Hill UMW president, opened the meeting with prayer and introductions. Martha Rogers and Rocky Wilcox assisted in the presentation.
The Austin District Amos Commission was established by the district to provide leadership in matters of public policy affecting “the least of these.”  It is based on Amos 5:24, “Let justice roll down like water, and righteousness like an everlasting stream.”
Teams are available to visit church groups to begin a conversation about social concerns.
The Rev. Mimi Raper (512-478-5684) is chairperson. Bill Carter (BbillCCarter@netscape.net) manages the speaker’s bureau and the listserve. The other elected members are Martha Rogers, Jack Speer, Rocky Wilcox, Wanda Holcombe, Jim Bailey, Pastor Carl Clark, Brian Heymens, the Rev. Jim Mayfield, the Rev. Jim McClain, Dionisio Salazar and Dennis Perryman. Ex-officio members are District Superintendent Robert Hall, District Program Director Beth Seward, the Rev. Bill Johnson (conference Board of Church and Society), Miryam Bujanda (Methodist Healthcare Ministries) and Bee Moorhead (Texas Impact).
