Connecting Neighbors
Connecting Neighbors is an initiative to encourage local churches to complete a local church disaster plan. It was initiated by UMCOR and the Disaster Response Committee of the Southwest Texas Conference. The program has received the endorsement of Bishop Dorf and the Cabinet.
What is required to participate in the Connecting Neighbors program?
1. Each church is asked to work with a trainer or consultant trained by UMCOR to assist them in developing a plan. 2. Each church must write a plan that is consistent with the Conference Disaster Response Plan. 3. The plan must be approved by the Administrative Board of the Church. 4. The plan must be approved by the Conference Disaster Response Committee (to make sure it is complete and consistent with the Conference Disaster Response Plan).
What should be included in the plan?
Every local church plan should include the following: 1. a plan to protect church property and other assets such as records; 2. a plan to minister to the needs of congregation members; 3. a contingency plan for existing ministries; 4. a plan for community outreach following a disaster.
How are churches that are part of Connecting Neighbors recognized?
Churches that complete an approved plan will receive a Certificate signed by Bishop Dorff and by Tom Hazelwood, Assistant General Secretary of UMCOR.
Who are the consultants in Southwest Texas Conference trained by UMCOR?
Eugene Hileman and Emmett Eary are trained to assist local churches as they develop a disaster plan. You may contact either of these consultants directly.
